Default August **SPECIAL** "On a Budget!" Throwdown (Entry & Discussion Thread) LASTS All Month!!

Our New August SPECIAL Throwdown Category is...

"On a Budget!"

This was Al Czervik's entry in the 2012 "On a Budget" Throwdown

CATEGORY DESCRIPTION - PLEASE READ:

1. With the price of everything going sky-high, let’s see how you can stretch your budget and cook a meal or dish for $20 or under! For example, take $20, and create an entry from it. Or, build an entry from existing food items on hand (from a fridge or freezer dive, for example) that total $20 or less.

2. You must show the prices of the item(s) you’ve cooked

3. MULTIPLE ENTRIES ARE ALLOWED and encouraged for this Throwdown only!

4. This is an open category, meaning you can cook whatever you like as long as it conforms to Standard Throwdown Rules.

You may submit entries that are cooked from Monday 8/1 through 8/31.

Entry pictures must be submitted by Wednesday Noon Central US Time on 8/31/22

Click here to read the rules for the BBQ Brethren Throwdowns...

Best of luck and even better eats to all!

Minor point of clarification - is this $20 per plate? ie if it’s some steaks that come in a package of >$20 but the serving/submission is just one steak, then does only that steak’s contribution to the overall price count?

Hmmm... Maybe I'll go Vegan this time around. Do I have to factor in the cost of fertilizer?

The essence of the category idea is to take $20, and create an entry from it. Or, build an entry from existing food items on hand (from a fridge or freezer dive, for example) that total $20 or less. Sure, I could make an entry of a single plate from a list of food that costs $100 and serves 5, and technically be under $20, but what fun is that?

Here's an example of how a compliant entry might look, R2egg2Q's entry in the last one from 2014:

No cook thread, just a last minute dinner cook. Had a chunk of pork ribeye roast from the On a Roll cook that I didn't use. Chunked it up and added some Walkerswood Jerk marinade. Into the fridge for four days. , Yep, I forgot about it. This is going to be some SPICY stuff!

Plated up with some corn & onions (Oakridge Smokey Chili Lime) and Pão De Queijo (Brazilian Cheese Bread)

Pork Ribeye $1.50
Jerk Marinade $0.75
Corn $0.50
Onion $0.20
Rub $0.25
Bacon Grease FREE
Pão De Queijo $3.00

Total: $6.20

Please use this as my entry pic.

This is my official entry for the "on a budget" throwdown.

I've been working on a chicken leg recipe for awhile and today's cook, might be the final combination I was looking for. I used Meat Church Honey Hog BBQ and Countryside BBQ sauce. Legs cooked on my Yoder YS640 with Lumberjack cherry pellets. Cook at 285 on wire hangers for 2 hours, sauce and continue for another hour.

For the throwdown, I decided on adding some Grimes sweet corn, red raspberries and Bud Light to round out the entry.

First time cooking corn on the grill. I was brought up on boiled corn and really like it. This method wasn't too bad. Ear wrapped in foil with butter, salt and pepper on medium heat for about 25 minutes.

Cost breakdown:

Twelve Chicken legs at $1.49/lb and I forgot to look at the total weight before I threw the package away. Sweet corn was 7 ears for $5 at the stand, raspberries were $2.49 at Aldi and the beer was $2.50 at Fareway.

Further breakdown,

chicken legs = $3.00 (conservative)
bbq rub = (2 legs * $5.00/12) for half a bottle = $0.83
bbq sauce =(2 legs * $3.99/12) = $0.67
sweet corn = $0.71 for one ear
butter = ($3.99/32 Tbsp) = $0.12 for 1 tablespoon
raspberries = ($2.49 * 0.75) = $1.87 for 3/4 of package
beer = $2.50 on sale!!!
consumables (propane, foil, pellets, etc)....say $5

grand total = $14.70

Please use the last photo as my entry.
