Default Let's Discuss

What's up SC8'ers?

3 Questions for you guys to start some SC8 discussion:

1. Why isn't this truck more popular? It has got to be the most realistic SC truck on the market, and honestly money wise I think it's on par with any other high performance race rig out there (I definitely had more money in my SCRT10 than I have in this truck). I just don't get it....how about you guys?

2. What wheels/tire combo are you guys running for loose, loamy outdoor tracks?

3. Anybody have any tips/tricks to make her handle better/go faster/look better, etc?

Please chime in!

No kidding right? Actually, most short course guys, if they are going to be honest, are a bit intimidated by this kit. The initial cost is the driving factor. I get that SC10's cost half of what our trucks cost but seriously... No comparison. In fact, EVERY owner of a shortcourse truck, 4x4 or 2wd, that sees mine immediatly wants one. The power is just so intoxicating when compared to the other trucks. This brings me to my second point. Let's be realistic, these things are flat out dangerous on 4s. Scary on 5s and flat out insane on 6s. Add to that the fact many of the guys are just getting into this hobby for the first time and want to include their kids... you know what i mean, guys letting 9 year olds race... c'mon.

When pen is put to paper most will realize they will have spent as much or more even more with the lesser kits, either in terms of breakage or boredom. Also, given I am new to this and more prone to crashing, my sc8s have withstood spills which would have totaled most other trucks. One could also argue parts support being an issue. Maybe, if compared to any Traxxas kit but seriously, the SC8 shares all of its parts with the RC8 or RC8t. Frankly I have had to go on line to get parts for my Slash 4x4 so realisticly there is no difference there.

2. What wheels/tire combo are you guys running for loose, loamy outdoor tracks?

Currently running buggy wheels with Enduro super soft tires. This will change as soon as my Trinidads show up and I'll be running Enduro 2.2/3.0 super soft to keep the scale look which I love.

3. Anybody have any tips/tricks to make her handle better/go faster/look better, etc?

Running the gold swaybars and 40wt shock oil makes for a good all around set up. Much better than the original RTR setup. Keep an eye on bolts loosening. I like 5/5/5 as well. Don't forget to tape the underside of your body to keep the tires from eating your paint. My favorite mod to date though is a set of Trinidads and street fighters for playing on the tarmac. They wear like iron and make the truck so much fun to own.

I would love to pick one up. Unfortunately the damn scale bug hit me again, so all of my spare cash has been going to build scale crawlers here of late.

I think the SC8s size and the lack of competition has been the main issue w/ there popularity. They are just the odd man out so to speak. No aftermarket support from the tire manufactures being the biggest issue IMO.

Good points fellas - it's just too bad that there aren't more of these out there. And you know it seems that parts support is kind of a chicken and the egg thing - does a vehicle's popularity drive the parts and aftermarket support, or does good parts and aftermarket support drive the popularity of a vehicle? Tough to tell. Hey 4x4moneypit are those RC8 gold sway bars? Also what springs are you running?

Man I love those DE rims too. Good to hear you like the Enduros - that's exactly the tire I had my eye on.

I'm running a O.S. 28 XZ, 2035 FT pipe, two Hitec 7955's, 50 wt shock oil (F&R), and stock sways. I'll be freshening her up soon and I think I'll go with 5/5/5, that seems to be standard for SC8's and RC8's. I'll also have to try those gold sways.

Thanks for the input - let's keep it going!

I just got my SC8 last fall, however the motor broke during break in, the guys at AE where nice enough to send me a new one and it sits waiting for the snow to go away. I'm going to convert it to electric I think, the new Castle 1/5 system looks pretty nice but is big coin.

Q1: most people want electric, there is not many classes from what I heard, alot of people stick with 1/10 scale, for a long time there was no upgrade parts

Q2: have not got that far yet

Q3: going electric sounds like it sure spices them up with 4-6 cell

I just noticed that Team Integy has released a whole whack of nice billet parts, the prices seem reasonable too
http://www.integy.com/st_main.html?p_catid=113

cant wait to start the E-conversion and building her up

Actually getting parts for this kit is very easy considering every single part on our truck is shared with the RC8 and RC8T. These are two of the most popular buggy/truggys sold.

1.
I feel the reasons it hasn't taken off yet is nobody else is really making a 1/8 sc truck to compete with it. I think there is one out there but it's not as competitive. Also the economy has tanked so for people to justify a 500-600 dollar toy is hard or get past the wife. AE should have offered it in a kit instead of just RTR so people that have radios and motors don't feel like they wasted their money on the RTR extras and could have brought the price down.

Associated and every manufacture should take a lesson from Traxxas marketing dept. You can say whatever you want about Traxxas but their marketing dept knows how to create classes and promote them!

The other problem is the sc8 is not a "basher" like a truggy or monster truck so hobbyist would probably pass on it unless there is a track nearby and even if there is one chances are they don't have a class for it.

I have mine and I love it! We do have a class for it at our track and I've gotten others to buy it as well. I can honestly say the sc8 is probably the best purchase I've made in this hobby. It's tough as nails and last season I only managed to break about $30 worth of parts the entire season, racing every weekend and practicing during the week. The stock engine treated me well but then I really took my time breaking it in and I have about 4 gallons through it and it still runs well. The things I would suggest AE change are the radio switch needs a rubber boot on it , the radio box could be a little roomier and the stock rims could be a better design to accommodate sc aftermarket tires better.

As far as making it go faster? Well believe it or not the sc8 class is the fastest overall class at our track and we are running them stock except for tires. The next fastest class is 3 seconds off of our average times so I'm not sure how to make them faster. Maybe better tires.

A track like the one your describing.. you might try aka enduro tires.

I run an SC8E and at our indoor track we are lucky to have 17-19 guys running these! Our hobby shop is selling more each day as well!

Indoor clay I am running Proline Suburbs, on our outdoor track I run calibers.

I know this is the nitro section, but I love running my SC8, this thing is the cat's meow!

Yeah, I agree....Nice thread guys....WOW RC77!!!.....17-19 guys running SC8s?!?!?......MAn, you have any video footage of these races?....That would be awesome!!.....

There have been a lot of good points on here, and I realize that they are from early 2010, but now hopefully we can get this class more recognized since the SC8e has some competition coming out soon.......the HPI APACHE SC, and HOBAO has one coming out too....I'm hoping this stirs it up a little bit and the 8th scale SC class can start growing....because like everyone else here, my SC8 is my favorite RC that I own!!

A SC8 is on my wish list, I have a rc10gt that has been my most durable truck and I really wanted a SC but couldnt afford the SC8 yet. SO I got a RedCat Aftershock 3.5 and I gotta say I love 1/8 SC trucks what a blast to drive. Now Im sure it has nothing on the SC8 but there is no way there is a $250.00 difference. I am going to get a SC8 soon and then I will know for sure. Some advice to you big name guys, you better take RedCat seriously they are quickly improving to more than a starter truck into good competition for the big boys. It may still be a few years off but the Aftershock is a hell of a tough truck.

Got it, came in last week. Bad weather and a long honeydo list has kept me from breaking it in sooner but this weekend I gonna get it broken in and bash it till the sun goes down. Got the bully dog body and i must say, although the Red Cat is a good deal at <$250 it has nothing on the SC8 and I havent even stated it yet.

When I got into SC in Oct the SC8 was the exact truck I wanted to get. It does have the best scale look. I also wanted a nitro version because that is all I used to run. I used to have nothing but AE in my garage and loved everything about AE.

Moving forward I ended up going with Traxxas because of a few reasons. 1 I could get 2 of the 2WD kits RTR for the price of one SC8 so I did. I got my dad one so we could race together and not have to go out and run by myself. 3 the durability of Traxxas is really hard to beat. The only thing I ever broke on my Slash is the stock rear hub carriers. We just kept a bunch on hand until I got the RPM hub carriers. No I run the Traxxas aluminum carriers.

With that being said my dads truck is basically stock with a Traxxas brushless system and I have 2 LCG chassis and I kept buying used parts and rollers to the point I have 3 complete trucks one for both of my younger boys and one tricked out truck that my wife runs with 1/8 scale buggy tires.

At some point I am going to get a SC8 becuase I do believe it is the best looking rig on the market with regards yo the Axio buggy. I would like to see a bigger market for the 1/8 scale SC teucks. Don't know if I will ever go back to nitro with the all the power you can get out of Lipo batteries. Good thread!

Nothing wrong with that RattleKan.....Racing with other family members makes it more fun....I still got my SC8, cause I just had to have it....But shortly after that the I ended up buying 2 RTR SC10's so me and my oldest son can run and race together....I've moved on from there and got my RC8B and just recently an SC8e and I love it.....this whole time I kept upgrading my sons SC10 and it kicks butt right now!...LOL....He's driving better everyday now and I might let him try driving my RC8B a little this year, if he can handle it...LOL...I just LOVE driving my SC8's, and would gladly stick with them while he improves....next year, I'll start my youngest son off by buying him a Traxxas Slash....he'll be 7 next month, so he needs something that can be banged up pretty good....All in all, the family that plays together, stays together....Good Times!!
