so Ive been looking over the gearing chart in the manual and it says stock pinion for a 4.5t motor should be 12t with a 62t spur. if i wanted to gear down( more bottom end less top) would i go up teeth on the pinion or down? I'm thinking down on pinion up on spur but not sure. thanks for the help.

Yes, down on pinion, up on spur....but there is a problem.... I can only find as low as 11t for a 5mm 32p pinion, and anything larger than a 62t spur will probably have a hard time fitting inside the gear cover. Depending on your speed control, you may be able to limit the maximum current to the motor (My Tekin RX8 can do that...) A 4.5T 550 is a LOT of motor, even for a pro, unless your track is all big sweepers and long straights... Depending on brand, I would recommend a 5.5 or 6.5 and then gear it up if you need to.... heat will NOT be a problem for these motors.... and wheel spin will limit accelleration more than over-drawing a higher turn motor...

i also have the RX8 and the motor is tekin sc4x 4.5t. i run on a pretty big 1/8th scale outdoor track, as well as a tighter indoor track. thats why i was trying to gear down a bit so i wouldnt have to swap motors for indoor.

Start with the 11t/62t combo (unless you can find, and want to try to fit a 64t spur...) If it's still too much to handle, set the current limit on the RX8. http://www.teamtekin.com/hotwire_RX8.html It's pretty near the end of the guide... I think I remember reading Randy Pyke or one of the other Tekin guys saying IF you're going to use it, set it at 7 for a starting point, then tweak it up or down from there.
