Default How do you do racing stripes with three colors involved with the Body?

I am going to paint my new bug body three colors , Pactra Blue Streak, Tamiya black and Pactra Indy silver. In the middle of the body i am going to do a racing stripe with black on the out side and silver in the middle with the trim black and the rest of it blue. I was wondering just to make sure, i would tape the blue parts and the silver line down the middle and paint the black parts, then i would keep the tape on the part that i want silver and paint the blue parts. Then finally pull the silver part off and back the rest with silver. The picture below is what i want to do. This is my first three color body, two colors was easy to do. Or should I paint the blue first then the black? I will be using blue painters tape. Thank you very much and I am looking forward to your information. Derrick

I would tape off the black parts and the silver stripe , then paint the blue (back it with silver) then peel up the black spots and paint them , then peel up the silver stripe and paint it .

I agree! Normally you would paint the black but it would be alot easier taping off the black parts than all the blue. Something like this would also be easier using LIQUID MASK than tape though. Post pics when done!

If it was me, I would mask off all the areas that weren't black and paint the black first. Then, after the black has been allowed a day to set up and dry, mask off the white areas and paint the blue streak color. Remove the final masking, and overspray the entire thing in white. It'll make your blue really pop. If that white strip down the center is silver, paint it first, follow the rest of the above steps.

Darkest to lightest like Arrow said. Once you lay down your final color, back it all with white to make the colors really nice and bright.

I made sure to do that, I figure out how to do the stripe with the different color in the middle. I put three pieces of tape down the middle. I taped the rest of the body I wanted covered. I pealed the side pieces of tape and I left the middle piece. So it left perfect stripes! I start painting the black last night. I plan on doing the blue today and the silver tomorrow. I will take picks soon.

If you want that Blue Streak to be a true blue, and pop, and be like it is in your pic above, just make sure and back it with white.

The middle Picture, the paint bleed and I made a mistake in to something decent. The stripe were going to go all the way to the front of the body. but the tape came up on the curve on the front of the body and it bleed So i made it in to a cap.

The blue part is the tape.

I can tell blue masking tape when I see it.
I meant at the top of the page, to get it "true" Blue Streak the color will pop more (be brighter) if you back it with white.

That looks good! Nice job! One way to help with bleeding is to make sure to rub down the edge of the tape everytime before you spray another coat.
