Default Wheel Binding when nut tightened

Hi,

Just fitted some vanquish front hubs and when I tighten down the wheel nut I'm getting some nasty wheel binding. what's the best way of sorting this? was thinking of putting a shim between the hex pin and bearing, will that work?

Hello!

I know this doesn't help but I just bought a "used" (never ran) Axial Exo and I have the same problem where I can't tighten down the wheel hexes or the wheel won't spin.
:(

A shim would make it worse. Some hexes seem to have too deep of a recess for the hex pins, basically the remainder of the backside of the hex is rubbing either the bearing or knuckle or both. In the past I've taken the back of the hex down on the side of a grinding wheel so that the hex pin doesn't need to sit in so far with success.

^^ Agree..
You must sit the HEX in the pin before it touches the bearing.. try to use a different hex or you will need sand the hex down from the side that sees the bearing.

I've also found that the hex recess(on the wheel) can be a little too deep. I remedied this by switching the wheel hexes to some slash 4x4 hexes I had sitting around and had no more binding. The wheels I was using were Proline split six SC for a slash/stampede 4x4. If I tightened the locknut down on the wheel while the stock hexes were on there there's would barely turn, after I switched to slash 4x4 hexes it was fine. Before I found the hexes I was using a thin Traxxas fiber washer on each hex right before I put the wheel on.

A shim won't make it worse. I had same issue and used traxxas shims between the pins and bearing and it is now smooth. Maybe if you used a large diameter shim it won't help but the small traxxas ones fit great.

Is TRA5529 the part to buy?
Or might as well buy some new Hex? There are some Tekno for 17$ that look good.

Here is what I'm seeing, the raised bossed step on the back of the Axial hex is hitting the bearing before the hex bottoms on the pin, where it then puts a thrust load on the bearing when the wheel nut is tighten, causing it to bind and eventually takes out the bearing. I'm not sure how people are getting the problem to go away by putting a shim, that should actually be making the problem worse.

I followed the advise of filing down the back of the hex a tiny bit and my binding issues went away
