Looking at these pics the “Flux” on the side leaves me to believe that these will be brushless powered. I can see front axle shafts so I know they’re 4wd, and I also spy a rear sway bar.

At this time this is all I know, I’ll be reporting back when I find more info.

Armed with a badge into the 2011 SEMA Show and his trusty tape measure he was promptly kicked out of the first booth he found that had the EXO Terra Buggy displayed, seems they didn’t want to reveal the specs to us. Not wanting to give up he tried the next booth and was able to get us the info we have been craving.

Adjustable Motor Mount: The patent pending adjustable motor mount included with the EXO features a two piece design that allows you to easily set your gear mesh with an adjustment screw providing the ability to achieve a perfect fit. A set screw is used to securely lock the two piece motor mount in position. The two piece mount is also keyed for proper alignment and strength.

Standard 32 Pitch Gears: The EXO utilizes standard 32 pitch pinion and spur gears to provide more tooth surface area for durability and efficiency to put its power to the ground!

Three Oil-Filled Gear Differentials: Three, silicone oil-filled differentials transfer power to all four wheels and because they’re oil-filled they can be fine tuned with silicone fluid. Each differential features four sintered gears housed in compact differential cases. This also allows the EXO to use compact and streamlined bulkheads for reduced weight, meaning less spinning mass for higher performance.

Durable Driveline Components: The stub axles are held in place by two bearings, an outer small bearing, and a large inner bearing. The larger inner bearing increases durability and stability. The steering pins are titanium nitride coated for less wear and durability. The axle is mated to a standard 12mm cast aluminum hex hub.

Quick Release Battery Mount: The patent pending quick release battery mount is easily adjustable to fit any battery pack. The flexible rubber straps are connected to a hinge on one end and the other contains a pin that keys into a composite plastic latch that keeps your battery securely in place. There’s also an integrated “lift assist” mechanism which puts the battery in the best position for removal. The lower plastic end plates are adjustable which allow you to fit any battery pack, and in most cases, two batteries will fit standing on edge. The motor position is centered lengthwise and battery is positioned towards the center for balance and stability.

Integrated Light Bar: Brighten up your night time driving session! The integrated light bar holds up to five LED lights and features clear plastic lenses and three styles of mesh covers -- plain, Axial and officially licensed PIAA covers! (LED lights not included)

Protective Skid Plate Bumpers: The front and rear bumpers are hinged which allow them to flex upon impact, protecting the EXO from crash damage. Aluminum skid plate inserts add an extra level of protection and feature an embossed surface for added style.

Rear Tail Lights: The built-in rear diffuser/wing has embedded rear marker light buckets for up to four LED tail lights (LED lights not included).

2.2/3.0 Raceline Renegade Wheels: Raceline is by far the most popular wheel for extreme duty off-roading. Their ability to stand up to the abuse demanded by the full-size racer and their show quality finish is second to none. The officially licensed Raceline Renegade gives the EXO that authentic racing look as well as providing the strength to handle whatever you can dish out!

Hankook Dynapro MT Tires: The EXO features realistic, officially licensed Hankook Dynapro MT tires that perform as good as they look. The front tires are narrow (34mm) which help the EXO navigate the terrain while the rear tires are wide (41mm) putting the power to the ground with enough traction to keep the EXO firmly planted. Internal ribbing helps reinforce the sidewall to prevent it from folding over which keeps the tires working at peak performance.

Adjustable Suspension: Threaded shock bodies, multiple shock positions and adjustments for toe, kickup (rear), camber, roll center and ackermann allow you to fine tune your suspension for high performance.

High Quality Components: Axial has chosen a variety of parts that keep the EXO durable and performing at a high level. These include steel turnbuckles, steel dogbones, steel outdrives, captured stainless steel hinge pins, full ball bearings, titanium nitride coated shock shafts and steering pins and a sintered steel pinion gear.

Tuned Shock Springs: Finding the right spring rate can be tough. Axial made it easy for you by including what they found to be the right balance of high speed and harsh terrain handling. The spring rate they have chosen keeps the EXO on course and ready for your next obstacle!

High Quality Steering System: The EXO Utilizes Steel steering posts, an aluminum steering rack, and aluminum servo saver retaining system with captured bearings to keep you pointed in the right direction. The entire steering system also leans back 10 degrees to match the front kickup which eliminates all bumpsteer.

Wire Routing: The chassis has plastic routing clips throughout which helps keep your receiver and servo wires snug and away from moving parts which could shred the wires.

Waterproof Receiver Box: The waterproof receiver box keeps your radio gear protected from the elements and with integrated wire management, it keeps the receiver leads organized and away from moving parts.

Patent Pending ESC Clip: Axial includes three ESC mounting plates. Securely clip in your Castle SV2, or Novak Havoc SC ESC’s with Axials patent pending ESC mounts. Running something different? Then use the included universal servo mount plate and standard servo tape.

Realistic Scale Details: The EXO features a variety of fully licensed, realistic features including a V8 Turnkey engine, a Fuel Safe fuel cell and an interior body set with four Corbeau race seats.

Robust Molded Roll Cage Design: The cage closely resembles what you’d find on 1:1 vehicles making this a strong and proven tough design that keeps the EXO well protected.

4mm Aluminum Chassis: The 4mm center chassis is made from 6061 aluminum for durability and features recessed pockets to lower the center of gravity.

Ground Clearance: The chassis tub is tapered to give you an extra 1/2” of ground clearance.

Double Shear Shock Mount: The captured double shear shock mount features an aluminum plate that keys into the molded cage for added strength.

Just days ago we published an article eluding to what we thought this vehicle might be. As it turns out we weren’t too far off the mark. With the SEMA show kicking off today Axial has teamed up with a number of companies to help release the new EXO Terra Buggy.

All day long pictures were rolling in of all the different EXO’s taking over the SEMA show. From Icon Vehicle Dynamics to Turn Key engine supply to Hankook Tires you couldn’t be anywhere at SEMA without seeing the all new EXO Terra Buggy. With 50,000+ attendees at the SEMA show that is sure to make a huge impact. The Axial marketing guys were spot on with this release!

I’ve been blowing up the phones of everyone at Axial today trying to get any shred of info I can, but they’re all super busy at SEMA right now. Hopefully we’ll know more here very shortly.

I did my nightly rounds on all the sites, then like I always do I headed over to the Axial blog to see if maybe Brad has built something new or added any new tech. To my surprise I see a new article about Racers Only Motorsports Designs

I’m a big fan of Racers Only Motorsports Designs in fact so much so that just in the past few weeks I took delivery on a drawing Rory Ward did for some new shirts we are having done for our sister site, RCShortCourse.com The new article in Axials blog is really awesome and goes into a lot of the history behind Rory and Racers Only, and touches on some badass desert vehicles. Here are a few of the pics from Axial.

Old School Walker Evans fan drawing

Now we’re getting to the point that made me rush back over here to RCC and do this article. Here’s a pic of Axials Rodney Wills going over something with Rory.

Rodney and Rory collaborating on something evil?

Could Rory be doing some new stuff for Axial? Some spy drawings? Kickass box art? I read further into the article and the last line reads “WILD CARD: How cool would it be if the drawing Rory was working on is a new rig for Axial? How about those green apples!?” Oh crap, they are working together. Let’s look at that picture and see what we can figure out.

Something new from Axial?

Now from working with Rory myself I know he always tries to be very correct in his artwork. He wanted pictures from me of the exact truck I wanted him to draw, “just do a short course truck” didn’t work. He wanted to see the exact suspension so it could be correct. Looking at this drawing I can tell for sure that it’s of an rc vehicle. The a-arms and knuckles scream RC.

Looking at the other side I can see the side of a front diff, and an axle shaft! Oh yea, this thing is 4wd. Now is it going to be a desert racer? Maybe a short course rig? A KOH type rig?

Oh wow, now I am getting excited, look at that killer body!

Can it have a solid axle in the rear? Oh please tell me!

Damn it, I can’t tell from the drawing! It just doesn’t quite show. I tried all my Axial contacts, Matt goes straight to voice mail. Brad hasn’t returned my call. Rodney is busy with dinner. Brandon is getting his weekly pedicure. Or all they all avoiding me because they know I am going to hound them for info? Am I just reading way too much into this, did Axial just stop by for a “visit” or were they there working on this new project?

UPDATE-

Spunkysandoval on the forum pointed out this picture I totally missed.

Look there on the right, is that a CAD rendering from Axial. Let’s spin it around and zoom in.

Now that we can see that, I am leaning towards an IFS rear, but still not totally sure. The shocks for sure look like Axial, and I think with this rendering laying there we can confirm they are in fact working on something.

UPDATE-10/26/11

So I was just scanning facebook and noticed Rory posted this:

“We did some work for Axial racing (Radio Controlled cars) and Brad, Rodney and Scott came out to Arizona for a visit. They were nice enough to do a little write up about Racers Only and a little of our history in the sport of Off Road racing. They have a pretty trick line of off road type RC vehicles, including some very cool rock crawlers and soon to be released concept off road racing type vehicles. Look for more info to be released at SEMA!!!”

So he just confirmed that he was doing the drawing for Axial, and that they’ll have some new “concept off road type vehicles” debuting at SEMA next week!

UPDATE-10/31/11

Just had this picture sent to me, looks like these are the tires for this new beast! Hankook Dynapros! I wonder if the little Tanner Foust character is a clue to the livery? This wouldn’t be the first time Tanner dealt with Axial.

UPDATE-11/01/11

Check out these latest pics from Axial’s photo stream.

Looks like some awesome new scale tires!

Nice action shot!

“Abstract detail with dust aftermath surface treatment.”

Rear wing?
And one of RCShortCourse’s members (DylanICON) posted this today.

“Hey I thought you guys may want to see this. I am friends with a couple of the guys from Axial from way back (worked on some desert race trucks and rally cars with them) and they were nice enough to infect me with the RC bug . They have been hinting about a new vehicle but wouldn’t say much till a couple days ago when they brought me this! I was sworn to secrecy until today when it could be reviled here at the SEMA show. It is a very cool machine and I couldn’t wait to leak some pics!

A couple of months ago I met Brandon from Axial (the designer of this car) when he came to a shock dyno seminar I had at my facility. We have been talking alot since about the parameters of vehicle dynamics and what does and doesn’t correlate between scale and 1:1. As soon as I get back from SEMA we will be making a fixture to mount RC shocks on my full size shock dyno so we can see how RC shocks behave compared to the full size race shocks . We will let you know what we find out!”

The finned aluminum clutch mount adds strength and durability and provides unmatched heat dissipation for increased longevity of the 8,000 RPM clutch. Since it is enclosed, it prevents dirt and debris from entering and fouling the parts. The oversized bearings handle greater loads and are more reliable.

1/4-Scale Heavy-Duty Throttle Servo

The throttle servo performs more than just throttle duties it is also the main source for braking power. This heavy-duty large-scale servo has the power to bring the 5IVE-T to a stop thanks to the functionality of the bias adjustable dual-disk brakes. No 1/10-scale throttle servos here.

Oneof the most critical aspects of tuning a Short Course truck is the performanceof the body. JConcepts, always on top of Short Course bodydevelopment, starting with the original Truth, Manta and the successful 2010ROAR National Champion Ford Raptor body.

Hi-Flow, taken fromthe JConcepts hierarchy of successful buggy designs, is the latest in ShortCourse body development which incorporates all the latest technology into asingle high-performance body. Already a champion, the Hi-Flowearned the top qualifying position and 1st place at the 2011 ROAROff-Road Nationals in the Pro 2 Modified class in the hands of RyanMaifield. A dominating performance, Maifield had no problems takingthe TQ in the first 3 rounds of qualifying and 1st place in A-main#1 and 2 to retain the title for JConcepts.

TheHi-Flow is a smash hit, starting with the most fashionable racing look, bodypanel attack angles and even greater air escape packages, the Hi-Flow oozes ofclass leading performance. The air escape package consists of userfriendly trim-out areas which have been strategically placed to ensure a cleanrace-able look that minimizes the trouble-some parachute effect. The large Hi-Flow areas are depressed into the body which allows the user tosimply score the bottom pocket and pop-out for instant results. The Hi-Flowhood-scoop, used predominantly as an under / over air release feature, blends beautifully into the sculpted extra-clearance fenders while releasingthe front end of inner pressure.

Thetop, rear, fender corners have been wedged reducing dead space, allowing morepass-through area minimizing unwanted air collection. Theroof of the body has been dramatically “rock-a-bye” shaped topromote a continuous roll in the event of roof crashes. Largeside windows with black-out side window decal treatment gives the Hi-Flowfuturistic character. Performance enhanced number and name platesprovide straight-line stability while retaining a fashionably styled look thatis unmistakable JConcepts.

JConcepts Hazard wheel is the 2011 ROAR National Champion.

ShortCourse trucks have evolved into high-performance racing vehicles andadjustability is always the key to success. Introducing theHazard 12mm hex wheel for the SC10 4×4 and SC10 by JConcepts. Apowerful new look that combines the winning combination of a 10 spoke design,bead-lock appearance and center lug nut detail with a hint of inspiration fromyesteryear. The Hazard will make an immediate impact on theperformance of the SC10 trucks by widening the stance of the truck by 6mm inoverall width. The increased width will maximize the SC10 and bringit up to the ROAR maximum legal limits in dimensional width.

Alreadya champion, the Hazard wheel earned the top qualifying position and 1stplace at the 2011 ROAR Off-Road Nationals in the Pro 2 modified class in thehands of Ryan Maifield. A dominating performance taking the TQ inthe first 3 rounds of qualifying and 1st place in A-main #1 and 2 totake retain the title for JConcepts.

Bynature, Short Course trucks have a high center of gravity and tend to feellight or tippy in high-speed sections. There is no better way toimprove on-track stability than to add width, and with the Hazard wheels, sweeping through the high-speed corners gets a little easier. Wheelprofile, interior and exterior ribbing and spoke design were all areas of focuswhile creating the combination of durability, clearance, functionality andappearance. With the black color and a matte face appearance, beingunique is worry free as practically any paint scheme can be matched to theseexciting new wheels. The hassle-free and lightweight 1-piece designcreates the ultimate race and show wheel for any competition.

Lightweight black anodized aluminum chassis

Precision formed and machined from 3mm thick premium aluminum alloy, the TEN-SCTE’s chassis provides a rock-solid foundation for unbeatable strength and stability. The chassis plate features a black anodized coating for increased durability and resistance to the elements.

Anodized, Threaded Shocks

The TEN-SCTE’s big-bore, 12mm machined aluminum shock bodies are blue anodized for smooth operation and wear resistance. Threaded shock collars offer easy yet precise adjustment of pre-load and ride height. Shock pistons and bladders are specifically designed for the TEN-SCTE’s chassis design and weight provides optimum ride and handling.

550-sized, 4-pole, 2800Kv programmable brushless system

Simple-adjust motor mount

The TEN-SCTE’s motor mount design is based on the TLR race-oriented 8IGHT-E motor mount design. A single screw will allow for quick adjustments and motor removal for maintenance and cleaning.

Off-road beadlock-style wheels with Losi exclusive Eclipse™ SCT tread pattern

The black wheels with simulated beadlock rings ensure power is transferred to the ground in style, while the Eclipse SCTs provide plenty of traction on multiple surface types.

4mm adjustable turnbuckles with captured ends

We’ve designed the TEN-SCTEs tie rods with captured ends to stand up to extreme impacts and virtually any terrain you’ll encounter. Captured rod ends prevent accidental disconnection and keep the suspension solid and reliable.

The TEN-SCTE comes ready to run with a DX3E radio system that features Spektrum 2.4GHz technology. Packed with features, the DX3E gives you everything you need to take complete control of the TEN-SCTE RTR. Its tough to beat this easy-to-use radio with its modern Spektrum styling, interference-free driving and added features such as battery indicator LEDs and steering dual rates. This kit replaces the stock XXX-SCT or XXX-SCB front hubs and axles and converts it to a floating 12mm hex, so you can run Pro-Line’s ProTrac wheels or any other “zero offset” 12mm hex wheel on the front of your Losi SC truck or buggy.

This includes any wheels made for the Losi Ten-SCTE 4WD and AE SC10 4X4! When combined with Pro-Line’s #6064-05 Rear Hex Adapters that also fit the Losi XXX-SCT/SCB, you can now run the same Pro-Trac or “zero offset” Hex wheel on the front and rear of your truck! No more front and rear specific wheels! The front inboard hub kit also allows you to run Losi XXX-SCT/SCB rear offset wheels in the front of your tuck or buggy but this will make the front about 0.1” wider than stock, which is still within ROAR legal width requirements. This kit is destined to become the must have item for your Losi XXX-SCT and XXX-SCB because it eliminates front and rear specific wheels. Get them now!

Features

Direct replacement for your XXX-SCT/SCB front hubs and axles

Includes precision rubber-sealed ball bearings

Allows 12mm Hex Pro-Trac offset wheels to be used on the front of your truck or buggy (#2727 Renegade, #2723 Split Six)

When used with #6064-05 Rear Hex Adapters, this kit allows for the same wheel to be used for the front and rear of your XXX-SCT/SCB

Race tested and proven extremely durable

Mark Pavidis and Jared Tebo have collaborated to come up with our latest 1:10 ShortCourse tire called the REBAR. The REBAR is designed for indoor tracks and hard packed, blue grooved outdoor tracks. The REBAR features double side rails on the edges of the tire which provides extra sidewall support. This extra support is key to making the tire feel consistent in the turns which enables you to have the confidence to push even harder. The wide staggered centerlugs give the REBAR great forward traction to hook up the power and launch your vehicle off the corner and over the jumps. Available in AKA’s long wearing Soft and Super Soft compounds.

These tires are going to be the handout tire for the SC class at the 2011 ROAR Nationals at Nor Cal Hobbies the second week in August.

The lower the setting the less throttle change limiting there is; for softer acceleration or for running on low-grip surfaces, raise it to a higher setting.

Drag Brake – sets the amount of brake applied automatically at neutral throttle to simulate the slight braking effect of a neutral brushed motor while coasting.

Dead Band – lets you adjust the throttle sensitivity width at neutral. Smaller values make the controller enter forward or brake/reverse with a smaller movement of the throttle trigger for finer control.

Cut-Off Voltage – sets the voltage at which the ESC removes power from the motor in order to maintain the battery at a safe minimum voltage (LiPo), or to keep the radio system working reliably (NiCd/NiMH).

Motor Timing – allows for lowering or raising the timing advance to the motor to reduce or increase amp draw, run time, motor/battery temperature and top speed and punch.

*ESC can be programmed manually, with the Castle Field Programming Card or through the Castle Link software interface.

ESC Specifications:
Voltage Input:2S-3S LiPo (7.4V-11.1V); 6-10 NiCd/NiMH (7.2V-12V)
BEC:3A @ 2S input
Current Rating:up to 100A
Dimensions:1.81 x 1.38 x 0.79 in (46 mm x 35 mm x 20 mm)
Weight:2 oz (56.5 g)
Motor Wires:13AWG 5.3 in (135 mm), including female bullet connectors
Battery Wires: 13AWG 4.72 in (120 mm), with Deans® Ultra Plug®
Receiver Wire:11.0 in (280 mm), with Universal radio connector
Motor Limit:on 2S/4200kV Max; on 3S/2800kV Max
Protections:low voltage cutoff, thermal protection

“competitors entered in full-bodied classes (e.g. Touring, Short Course, Truck,
On-road, etc.) run bodies that have at least a minimum level of
headlight, grille and taillight decals or painted representations on all
bodies where applicable.”

Competing at a National Championship has always been a crowning
achievement for many aspiring racers. ROAR National Championships have
been some of the most competitive events in the history of RC and the
“higher level of racing” has been a time-honored tradition that
separates these competitions from all others. The Acronym “ROAR” stands
for “Remotely Operated Auto Racing.” “Auto” is the operative word, which
implies that we race some form of vehicle that loosely resembles that
of full-scale vehicles. As such, ROAR will require that competitors
entered in full-bodied classes (e.g. Touring, Short Course, Truck,
On-road, etc.) run bodies that have at least a minimum level of
headlight, grille and taillight decals or painted representations on all
bodies where applicable. Bodies with no such details will not be
permitted to compete.

Some may view this as an unnecessary distraction, but doing so presents
our hobby and sport in a more organized and professional manner, and it
only requires a very small effort on behalf of the racers. Please just
make use of the decals included with the bodies that you’ll run on the
track and help to present the RC community in a more positive manner.
Then, when people who see high level competition for the first time, who
might otherwise confuse these as blobs, might actually recognize these
as cars and trucks.

Please share your thoughts on this topic in the comments section below.
